So now what?

The new U.S. Congress convenes this Thursday, with the Democrats not only finding themselves as the new majority party, but dealing with an agenda that cost many Republicans the mid-term elections. As the United States marks a grisly occasion in the Iraq War with the 3,000th death of a U.S. soldier, the Democratic congress must deal with President Bush’s plan for Iraq and not merely criticize him. The President may announce a plan to raise troop levels later on this month. Polls indicate many Americans are frustrated with Bush’s handling of the war and the Democrats need to work with him in developing a viable exit strategy. “Democrats are prepared to govern and ready to lead,” said Nancy Pelosi, the first woman speaker in the history of the House. But first up for the Democrats:
· Implementing new ethic rules
· Raise the minimum wage
· Implement 9/11 Comission recommendations
· Cut subsidies to the oil industry
· Promote stem cell research
· More affordable prescription drugs
· More affordable college education

It’s a tall order and this Congress wants to act quickly, planning to make their mark during their first 100 hours in power. All of this and the Iraq War. Can it be done? Write your local Congressman. Write your Senator. Share your thoughts, concerns and believe it or not, they will write you back. They will inform you on what and how they vote. One part of my New Year's Resolution is to take a more active part in this Democracy. That and of course, to get in shape.
